I haven't posted anything about this because it has been so matter-of-fact to me, but baby Brian has some rather pronounced Mongolian spots on his lower back and buttocks. Jordan had them too, although not as pronounced, but I learned about them during her adoption. I had also heard about a case in Pennsylvania where a child was removed from her newly adopted parents for suspicion of child abuse. After a couple of weeks, the "bruises" did not disappear, and the Mongolian spots were validated. The child was then returned to her parents.

It is important to share this information with any child care providers and relatives who might be providing care for your infant.

after reading your post the other day about mongolian spots, i took the opportunity to inform my husband about them. i will have him read the article and see the picture you posted so he will have a better idea. also good idea from dawn to have our pediatrician document them when he gets home so we are covered!
I'm glad you posted this too Ann-Maddy has LOTS of very pronounced Mongolian spots all over her back and buttocks. The ones on her back go all the way up over both her shoulders so when she wears sleeveless tops they show. We have already had several people ask us "what happened to her". And she has a habit of walking around and lifting up her shirt and it looks like she has about 30 bruises on her back. We have already educated our family and friends on them but I am always feeling paranoid in public about them. Half of me wants to tell people what they are because I know they have noticed them and the other half of me says its none of their business. I'm not looking forward to summer though! We already get enough intrusive questions from complete strangers! Are your daughters completely gone? Just curious how long it takes for them to fade. Baby Brian looks like he is thriving in his new home-enjoy your family!

Ann - We didn't know about the mongolian spots until we saw our son for the first time. He has them really bad on his back and even some rings around his ankles and a spot on his wrist. We were told they might fade later. To play it safe, we took pictures of him in Viet Nam and have attached them with the Visa physical where it was documented he had m.g. We then filed copies with our pediatrician and with our social worker who did our home study. When we travel, we'll keep a set with us in case we have to make an unexpected trip to the doctor or e.r. A lot of people in the medical profession are not familiar with them. Your kids are adorable!
